Active Classroom Is UK’s Future Solar-Powered Houses

The Swansea University in Wales, United Kingdom has just succeeded with their solar-powered Active Classroom project. After six months of trial, the test revealed an estimated 60 percent energy saving is achievable in a year. And with this development, some government officials are proposing that the technology should apply on a national scale.

The Active Classroom is SPECIFIC’s project to demonstrate a viable full-scale building that acts as both energy-saving utility and a power station for other electric-powered entity. That includes the electric-powered cars from Tesla and other car manufacturers.

The success of this project has lead experts from various industries to believe that it is about time to benefit from this innovation. The technology works so now it should be put in place for everyone to use.

The Active Classroom Project

The design for the Active Classroom was based on Swansea University’s SPECIFIC Innovation & Knowledge Centre for the Active Homes Neath social housing development. The initial plan was to see how well the technology could perform in an actual application.

Swansea University used its Bay Campus and built the solar-powered classroom and used it on a daily basis. The classroom has its laboratory, with researchers able to monitor all the activities conducted inside the Active Classroom. They evaluated the overall performance of the building. Making sure that everything is as interactive as possible with regards to the students’ needs.

That test is important as it will be useful for future validation. All the data will be the basis for when the technology will adapt to consumers and construction sectors.

Active Classroom At Work

Independent energy consultant Andris Bankovskis, author of the report submitted to concerned parties said that these infrastructures could impact the national energy consumption by reduced three gigawatts generated capacity. That is equivalent to a one large central power station.

He also added that a reduced carbon dioxide emission of up to 80 million tons in 40 years would be achievable. That is when the Active Classroom project applies to Active Houses. Also, not to mention the economic boost for the UK because of the new industry.

Bankovskis emphasized in his report that the result is compelling enough that the government should make a considered move as soon as possible. Given that the proposed project could cost billions, still, the expected reward could be significant and long lasting.

UK To Realize The Project

This recent development is timely as the UK government has just announced considerable measures relating to energy saving. The need to phase out petrol and diesel engine cars should be a priority leading to greener options in the next decades.

SPECIFIC Chief Executive Kevin Bygate said that with the Active Homes Neath project already underway, the country as a whole could benefit from it. These homes designed as a power station have many potential uses. And that is talking about long term advantages. With the cooperation of Pobl and Neath Port Talbot Council and other sectors that funded the project, this is now in progression. Innovate UK, EPSRC, and European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government are the ones funding the project.

Currently, 16 new homes are under construction with Active Homes in it in the Swansea Bay City. The £1.3 billion investment signed by Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to be available by the year 2019.
